Luau!

So here is a cake that was done for a luau wedding shower. All buttercream… And the sand is made up of a sugar, chocolate, peanut butter chip mixture..oddly enough this was the heaviest cake I have made, and the hardest to transport…. But it made it.

It’s that time again!

So, I have taken a little time a way from baking. But it is time to get back in the swing of things… I need to plan a cake for a bridal shower. And as an added gift… since it is a close friend, I am going to throw in some cookies too! okay really I have been wanting to try these cookies with this amazing frosting on them. Seems simple. So this is the perfect time! The shower I have been told is Luau themed…. and I know that butter cream icing is preferred…. so time to rack my brain…

It’s a long way home

So this post may be all over the place but please try to stay with me… First off I need to post a picture of the cute cupcakes I made for someone dear. It was his one year at the PD so I decided to make him a sweet little gift… you know a token of my appreciation for what he does for our community. ok sorry, I had to. But really it turned out to be a great form of self promotion…. Seems as though I may have picked up some future happy customers. Second, I have posted a picture of one of the fabulous cakes M and I made for our birthday. I will get photos of the second cake up soon, I only have it on my camera and do not have the right connection with me to have it uploaded. Sorry. Third, I figured I would post a picture I found in my bethatmom folder of a egg bouquet I made during Easter for little ones class. The eggs were filled with playdoh, stickers, candy, erasers, a stretchy bunny, and I cant remember what else. I really am itching for another holiday… there is nothing like little kid parties. Oh, and I finally did get a personal blog up.

Another fun night!

Another completed cake! If you know anything about the way I like I to bake, you know that I always have a “soundtrack” and each time it’s different. Well, last night I would like to say that I had the best soundtrack ever! I hardly ever bake when A is around because it is not fair that I have all my attention focused on a “creation”… its different if we are doing something for us. But last night she was my little helper and kept me laughing all through the ups and downs of this cake! I will say there is a first for everything… I broke the first layer of the cake… three piece jigsaw puzzle! Some colorful words may have been thrown about, but the best was the reaction from A… She dropped her jaw and just said in the most casual deep voice “bummer, dude.” I’m almost certain I shot her that look, oh you know the one… this was far more than any “bummer.”

 Let’s see what are some other things that came up last night?  She is not very good at being sneaky. First rule; don’t bring attention to yourself when you are trying to eat the icing. Ways in which A failed at rule number one: “you busy momma? I’m not doing nothing, your busy” “Just look at your phone and leave me alone.”

Yes, last night was a fun night. The cake I think came out rather well. It was the first time in awhile that I wanted to make a round cake… I had this cute little idea in my mind, and the only request I received was for a square cake. So it took me along time to even decide on what I was going to do. The cake is fudge marble, typical 2 layer with butter cream in the middle. The Stripes on the cake are painted with this glitter gel that also lines the bottom of the cake. And the top bow is sprinkled with some edible glitter flakes. I will say I think this is one is one of my favorites… it was something about “painting” the fondant… took me back a couple years. You know the ones, sitting up late at night, music, incense and a canvas. Hmmm amazing how these hobbies are similar.

Monday Madness

Monday nights have unofficially become cake night… Fortunately for me the cupcakes I needed for this week were a bit premature. So I will be making those handsome cupcakes for a handsome somebody next week. Those of course will be done early next week.. and by the end of the week I will have the cake of the year done! Yes! That long awaited birthday cake for me and M will be done sometime before the 15^th. Oh, but the best part is that we are working super hard on something for a special man in both of our lives! The only man that matters to us really…. Now doesn’t he deserve something a little special every now and then? I just hope our creation for him doesn’t outshine our cake… what do you expect when we are nothing but LEOS? That’s right, drama.

keeping busy!

The first week of August will be a fun one! I will be making a birthday cake for a soon to be 9 year old little girl, and the cutest cupcakes in town for a “congrats on your first year” gift. I am especially excited about the cupcakes…I mean that is how all this came about. My love for making cupcakes… and somewhere that got lost in “look what I can do with cakes.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited about the cake….I am typically given free will to do what I please with them, but that is always hard. I have to try and figure out what they might like. With the cupcakes I know exactly what I want from them…. The other exciting thing is I will be using butter cream icing and fondant icing. Not to mention that I am making the cupcakes for a couple of reasons: 1) I surprised myself with WANTING to do something sweet. (so no backing down) 2) I genuinely like the person. 3) I want that person to see that I genuinely like them. J OH, yeah… and maybe my love for cupcakes. Yeah that. J

Do I really need to explain again why I do this? This cake was made for a co-workers daughter who was turning 11. Mind you this was last minute notice and done late at night but I survived, and most importantly the cake survived! This cake was especially fun, since I had my best friend helping me out! Even though we were both exhausted and not really saying much at all… It was still a blast! I think M learned a few things and enjoyed herself…I was too busy caught up on “girl talk”

 

Needless to say the cake is one of my favorites for many reasons… the cute letter; sharing my new passion with someone I love, the girl talk I forced out of her… it was all great. Yes, I really do love the 10×10 pan…. It is just so simple to use!

No longer MIA!

I realize that I have not gone into detail about my great adventure of two cakes for the same day… or even posted more pics as suggested… I will do it. Eventually. I have been “running amuck” as an old friend would say and have been enjoying every last minute of it!! But as far as I know the cakes were a hit, and they even refused to cut one until the next day~ sounds like my job was done!

But today, oh, today brought me back to reality… a reality that I am excited about! I was asked if I could get a birthday cake done by Monday for a soon to be 11 year old. Really?? If you know me well enough, you know that I like a challenge… Sure I didn’t have any other cakes planned for this weekend…. This weekend was going to be one that I have been looking forward to…..But that doesn’t mean that I can’t fit a cake in there, somewhere!  Especially when it’s for a birthday party! I will not disappoint… so now, I’m off to let my creative juices run…
